LIVE: Back to School, Back to Sleep

FARGO — Child sleep experts say if you want to get your kid to be able to wake up in time for school when the semester starts in a couple of weeks, you need to get them started soon.

Good sleep is critical for kids’ learning.

But, as most sleep-deprived adults discover on the first Monday back from vacation, it can take awhile to shift back into earlier bedtimes.

After a summer spent with perhaps laxer bedtime rules and three months of sleeping in, your child’s bedtime may need to shift significantly.

That’s where the advice of Sanford’s pediatric sleep physicians comes in handy.

Dr. Arveity Setty says you can start by shifting your child’s bedtime earlier by just fifteen minutes.

You can even try to do it by a half hour, if your kids will cooperate.

And just like for adults, you’ll want to limit blue screens ahead of bedtime so their brains can start to rest and relax.

Teenagers, says Dr. Setty, have the toughest time adjusting.

That’s because their bodies are literally hardwired at this stage of development to stay up later and wake up later too.

For how to help your child adjust for the start of the school year, and Dr. Setty’s surprising advice on naps, plus his best sleep hygiene tips and techniques, check out the full length Morning Show interview.
