Rare Snow Squall Hits Area Roads
The weather pattern is characterized by sudden, sharp winds that severely limit visibility.
FARGO, N.D. – Fresh snow wasn’t the issue for drivers on Fargo-Moorhead area roadways on December 4th. It was a consistent series of blustery wind patterns that kicked up the existing snow and put a huge damper on visibility.
“It’s down to 100 feet or less at times when the wind is still blowing that fresh snow around,” said Corey Houim, services manager for Fargo Public Works.
With that came the reminder to give plows their space – especially while they too navigate the treacherous conditions.
“We just need the wind to subside here below 30 mph, and then we should be able to get visibility, then we’ll go out and start scraping some of our primary roads,” said Houim.
“If everyone could back off and give us a little bit of room that’d be greatly appreciated.”
Houim confirmed that the department is well-staffed and prepared for the continued wintry months ahead.
Meanwhile, the Fargo Police Department put out their own PSA urging extra caution on the roads. They say they know that it’s a busy time with much to accomplish, but that’s no reason to use unsafe driving practice in these conditions.
“I know we’re all kind of in a hurry, especially this holiday season, trying to get places we want to go,” said Sgt. Shawn Gamradt, “but you can help out a lot by just slowing down, giving the vehicle in front of you a little more space and a little more time.”
