ND Representatives Sponsor Resolution, Asking for Supreme Court to Redefine Marriage

BISMARCK, N.D. (KVRR) — A new resolution would urge the United States Supreme Court to restore the definition of marriage.

The resolution would define a union of marriage only between a man and a woman.

Representative Bill Tveit of Hazen is the primary sponsor.

In 2013, the Supreme Court ruled that marriage is a fundamental right that should be available to all couples, regardless of sexual orientation.

Those who testified against the resolution said that there needs to be a separation of religion from government.

“Throughout history, societies have recognized that love alone is not the basis for marriage. Marriage exists not merely for personal fulfillment, but for the greater good for society. Particularly for the wellbeing of children,” said Arthur Schaper, Field Director for Mass Resistance.
“Marriage is not solely a religious institution. It is an important union that does deserve to be enjoyed by those who seek to enter it,” said Christina Sombor, Lobbyist for the North Dakota Human Rights Coalition.

No decision has been made.
