North Dakota House committee discusses resolution to add minimum wage raise to 2026 ballot
BISMARCK, N.D. — Work has resumed at the legislature in Bismarck after crossover week when bills move from one body to the other.
Lawmakers are considering a resolution to add an article to the state’s constitution regarding a minimum wage.
The state currently follows the federal minimum wage, which is $7.25 per hour. The resolution would add a minimum wage to the state’s constitution and raise it to by two dollars to $9.25 per hour.
There would also be an annual cost of living assessment done.
HCR 3032 states that the minimum wage cannot be lowered by the annual cost of living assessment.
“I think the number that runs true is that 11% of our state runs in poverty,” said Rep. LaurieBeth Hager (D-Fargo). “I hope you all look at the compass report and look at what your own district is, what percentage of your people are living in poverty, because they’re here.”
If passed, the resolution would be put to voters to decide in the 2026 election.
