ATLANTA (KVRR) — There is a Salmonella outbreak linked to backyard poultry according to the CDC.

Seven people in six states have gotten sick.

The states include South Dakota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Missouri, Utah and Florida.

Backyard poultry, like chickens and ducks, can carry Salmonella germs even if they look healthy and clean.

CDC recommends washing your hands for 20 seconds after touching birds, their supplies, or collecting eggs to cut down on your chances of getting the bacteria.

Most people infected with Salmonella develop diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps 6 hours to 6 days after being exposed and it usually lasts 4 to 7 days.
