Life sentence for man convicted of dismembering his mother

HASTINGS, Minn. (KVRR-KFGO) – A Burnsville man has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder of his 82-year-old mother.

Last week, Troy Mitteness was found guilty of premeditated first-degree murder and intentional second-degree murder in the killing of his mother, Sandra, in June of 2022. He told investigators that he dismembered her body and scattered her remains between Burnsville and Appleton in west-central Minnesota. He was sentenced on Tuesday.

The Dakota County Attorney says Mitteness spent his mother’s money and he thought she was becoming suspicious.
