DFL releases priorities for special session on gun control, Republicans say their input wasn’t considered

ST. PAUL (KVRR) — Democrats in Minnesota release their priorities for a special session on gun control.

It comes in the wake of the shooting at Annunciation Church in Minneapolis and the killing of Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband.

Gov. Tim Walz and DFL leaders unveiled a list of reforms which includes bans on assault weapons, high-capacity magazines and binary triggers.

Republicans say their input was not considered.

Republican Floor Leader Harry Niska of Ramsey said in a statement, “Holding up policies that will help keep Minnesotans safe just to push an undefined gun ban is irresponsible.”

“And the makeup of the legislature right now requires Republican votes to get this agenda across the line and I am frustrated that I hear we haven’t done any work and there aren’t votes,” said Sen. Erin Murphy, Majority Leader from St. Paul.

Rep. Lisa Demuth, the Republican Speaker of the House said, “The governor is the only one who can call a special session. We stand ready to fully participate in the legislative process.”

In the governors draft agreement, lawmakers would be called back into session starting October 6.

But a special session has not officially been called.
