Winter Clothing Drive Raises Awareness of Lack of Warming Stations

Event organizers say they've not received any indication from either city government where they plan to hold warming stations this winter.

MOORHEAD, MN (KVRR) – With the cold weather drawing nearer, it’s becoming increasingly more important for folks in need to have proper winter gear – especially with a lot of uncertainty regarding warming stations.

The Fargo-Moorhead Mutual Aid & Direct Action Network held a Winter Clothing Drive at the Moorhead Public Library on Saturday.

Organizers collected hundreds of socks, mittens, coats, hand warmers, and other essentials.

Those working the event say they were heartened by the number of people who came to give.

“We didn’t use this location last year, so we were a little worried if people would come out and find us, and people were showing up before we even got here today, actually,” said Olivia Fisher. “So, yes, it’s very helpful, and it warms our hearts to see people caring and bringing all these new socks and stuff for everybody.”

The group also wanted to use this event as a call to action for city leadership.

This is the first winter since the camping ban went into place in Fargo, and a warming center has yet to open up in Fargo or Moorhead. The Cass County Public Health building is not available for winter warming this year.
