Clay County DFL and GOP prepare for caucus Tuesday evening

CLAY COUNTY, Minn. (KVRR) — Clay County DFL and GOP members are gearing up to prepare for this year’s Precinct Caucus.

“Precinct caucus is well the beginning of the election season. It’s bringing neighbors together to talk about issues and candidates and get the ball rolling towards November,” said Paul Harris, Chair of Clay County DFL.

This year’s Democratic caucus focuses on the seats now held by Rep. Heather Keeler in the Minnesota House of Representatives 4A seat, as well as the seat held by Rep. Michelle Fischbach on the Minnesota Congressional side.

“People are fed up generally, with what’s going on in Washington and specifically what’s going on down in Minneapolis right now. I think the reaction to that is going to put us in a very strong position,” said Harris.

“We feel very good this year, we think we’ve got a.. It’s been quite a while since the Republicans have won a state office. We’d have to go back to Governor Pawlenty, and that’s twenty-some years ago,” said Fred Wright, Clay County GOP.

Wright said that in previous years, the caucus outside of a presidential election has brought out a decent number of people. But both parties believe that current state issues, such as fraud and law enforcement issues, will bring people in.

“Some people get involved because of a candidate. For example, Trump is a good example of that. They might not have been a Republican to begin with, they might have been a Republican and not showing up but for some reason, he caught fire with some people. And he brought them out. For others, it’s an issue,” said Wright.

Residents of Hawley, Hitterdal, Felton, and Ulen, as well as the townships of Cromwell, Eglon, Flowing, Goose Prairie, Hagen, Highland Grove, Keene, Parke, Riverton, and Spring Prairie will meet at Hawley Elementary School Media Center.

Residents of Barnesville as well as the townships of Alliance, Elkton, Humboldt, Skree, and Tansem will meet at Barnesville High School.
