Fargo’s assistant police chief is elevated to interim police chief

FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) — A member of the Fargo Police Department since 2002 is now the city’s interim police chief.
Commissioners unanimously approved the appointment of Assistant Chief Travis Stefonowicz to the position.
City Administrator Michael Redlinger says Stefonowicz’s thoughtful approach and commitment to both public safety and officer wellness make him exceptionally well-suited to lead the department.
He takes over after the retirement last week of David Zibolski who had served as chief since 2020.
At least one commissioner had concerns about who will lead the department if the interim chief is out of town.
“It’s actually part of our policy that we identify specifically who’s in charge in my absence so depending on who is available for that weekend or whatever the situation might be we just clearly identify who that person is,” Stefonowicz told commissioners.
The city has also adjusted its timeline for selecting the next chief to better align with the city election in June which will see a new mayor and two new commissioners.
The position will be posted on May 11 and close on June 19 with the selection process beginning in mid-July.
Here is what Stefonowicz had to say in a press release by the city:
“I am honored to step into this role and continue serving alongside the dedicated men and women of The Fargo Police Department,” said Interim Chief Travis Stefonowicz. “Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of working with individuals who are deeply committed to this profession and to our community. During this period of transition, my focus will be on providing consistency, stability and support for our team while we strive to provide the high level of service our community expects and deserves.”
