Planting the Seeds of Learning

FARGO — It’s an annual tradition designed to get you garden-literate, and it’s brought to you by the folks of the Fargo Public Library.

And there are still a few spots available to sign up for this year’s “Planting Day” event at the Library Learning Garden in South Fargo at the Dr. James Carlson branch.

Each year, volunteers from Growing Together Community Gardens come out to teach people how to grow fruits, veggies, herbs and flowers in the plot at the south side library branch plots.

Then, there are regular spots open through the season for you to come and help weed and maintain the plants.

You get to keep and eat what you grow.

It’s all part of a concerted effort by the library to get people educated about how to grow their own gardens.

The library branches also have a “seed library” that NDSU’s Master Gardeners curate and present — but these seeds you don’t check out.

Instead, you can browse the stacks to select packets home to grow in your own garden.

The Fargo Public Library’s Lori West joined the Morning Show to talk about where you can still browse the seed library, how to get involved in Planting Day, and why hands-on learning can be the best way to master the skill of gardening.
