FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) — Fargo City Commission voted 3-2 last night to dissolve the Human Rights Commission.

The vote was recommended by Commissioner John Strand who says it’s time to acknowledge that the commission was not working.

Human Rights Commission Chair Sekou Sirleaf requested the vote be delayed until the next commission meeting, when Mayor-Elect Josh Boschee is seated.

Sekou was a candidate for mayor in the June 9 election.

“John, I’m under the understanding that they can work with the state association and form a local chapter in Fargo and activists could have a standing committee in the City of Fargo and could get many things done they would like to get done. I think you’re right, oftentimes they are inhibited by open meeting laws, by different confluent things that were hard for them to meet,” said Mayor Tim Mahoney.

Outgoing Commissioners Denise Kolpack and Dave Piepkorn voted against the motion.
