They call it “chess at 90 miles an hour” and a club in Fargo is getting pretty good at it.

The F-M Fencing club brought back six individual medals and two as a team from the Minnesota State Championships in St. Paul.

Fargo South’s Eddie Powell stole the show, taking the gold medal in the men’s epee, while his sister Nicki came in second on the women’s side.

For a program that’s only in its third competitive year, it’s a huge accomplishment.

MN Men’s Epee Champion Eddie Powell says, “I get to spend a lot of time looking at my opponent and trying to figure out what they were doing, and then trying to figure out how to beat it.  And that has to happen as they’re doing the same thing to me.”

“Every year we have got better. We have brought more kids and won more medals. We don’t know it yet.  Where is the limit?  So… we’ll see,” says F-M Fencing Master Enrique Alvarez.

The F-M Fencing club is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization.
