6-Year-Old Boy Identified in Fatal Car Crash Near Cando
Eugene, who was wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the vehicle as it rolled into a ditch
TOWNER COUNTY, ND — Authorities have identified the six-year-old boy who died in a car crash near Cando.
Eugene Cain, of St. John, died after the vehicle he was riding in hit another vehicle on U.S. Highway 281 at about 3:30 p.m. Thursday.
Eugene, who was wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the vehicle as it rolled into a ditch.
The driver, 52-year-old Alden Cain, and another passenger, 47-year-old Kathy Cain, were also injured in the crash.
Troopers say Alden Cain was attempting to pass another vehicle being driven by 44-year-old Todd Stephens of Devils Lake.
Stephens, who was not injured, was waiting to turn onto 77th Street NE when the crash happened.
Two passengers in Stephens car, 10-year-old Rogue Stephens and 8-year-old Logan Stephens, also were not injured.
According to the North Dakota Department of Motor Vehicles, it is a state law that all children seven years of age or under must ride in a booster seat or a car seat.
Seat belts can be used only if children weigh more than 80 pounds and are taller than 57 inches, or just under five feet.
