Sharing the Love in Downtown Fargo

FARGO — Remember this time of year in grade school?

The red construction paper hearts, the tiny cartoon cards with silly puns, the little bags of heart-shaped candy and cookies you painstakingly wrapped the night before the Valentine’s party at school.

No one went away empty-handed.

In a time when so much of what we see and exchange with the people we love is entirely electronic, there’s a special sweetness to exchanging old-fashioned valentines.

So this Valentine’s Day, a local art space is open for you to share in that, even if this year you’re entirely on your own.

Deanna Dahlsad is an artist and owner of downtown’s Lunatique Boutique.

It’s known for its dark, quirky and morbid themes, but it also does dark romance, too.

While her art is usually more Halloween than Valentine’s Day, Dahlsad says this time around it’s all about fostering connections within the community, particularly in downtown.

She’s hosting a Valentine’s card swap coming up this Saturday, February 14th.

You can bring store-bought ones, or handmake your own.

She asks only that you avoid snarky humor this time around, since so many people who visit the store are reporting a sense of isolation and sadness, especially during this winter’s latest news cycle.

Any Valentines left over after the exchange will go on to recipients at one of our metro’s homeless shelters, Micah’s Mission, which happens to be hosting more children than usual this time of year.

Dahlsad joined the Morning Show to talk about why so many people in her community are seeking connection, and how you can get involved while brightening the day of a stranger.
