Protesting Against Sexual Assault
The sentence given in an alleged rape of an MSUM student in Fargo has led to a protest.
Taylor Pederson was given one year of probation and will not have to serve any jail time or register as a sex offender after pleading guilty to reduced sexual assault charges.
One MSUM student created a Facebook event to invite anyone to protest against what many consider a light sentence and the overall issue of rape.
Dozens of people showed up on the Veterans memorial bridge this afternoon with signs to protest.
The Facebook event creator Jessy Hegland said, “Raise community awareness, and to give people a voice to vent their frustrations at how appalling this thing is, 98 percent of rapist don’t spend a day in jail.”
MSUM has a free and confidential clinic and counseling center for those who have been sexually assaulted.
