New Crime Fighting Tools In Fargo
Some new programs are being introduced in Fargo that will allow the police department to have more eyes around town.
The SafeCam project is just one that will help businesses and citizens to help police solve crimes.
SafeCam will allow you to register your security cameras with the police department.
Another program will allow you to see crime trends and hotspots around town.
Police say they hope this will help solve crimes more efficiently.
Kelly Kading recently moved to Fargo from Green Bay.
She’s a student at NDSU and likes the idea of the new SafeCam program.
“I think it’s a good thing. I think my landlord would probably think it’s a good thing too, and my parents seeing as how I’m living by myself,” said Kading.
With SafeCam, if a crime happens near a camera, police can easily identify where they are.
“I think that it helps get our community involved and feel like, it helps them feel like they have a little finger in helping us prevent crime and deterring crime and maybe even sometimes solving crime,” said Fargo Police Department Officer Jessica Schindeldecker.
Bob Stein also lives in Fargo and agrees that it can be a good program for the city.
“If they decide that’s what they want to do and they want to cooperate with police on that, that’s up to them and that kind of cooperation is beneficial to both,” said Stein.
The other program is Crimereports.com.
People can go online and see where crime is happening, and they can even send anonymous tips.
“People can check out their neighborhoods, see what’s happening for activity, in their neighborhoods and actually look at maps to see where crime is happening,” said Fargo Police Department Chief David Todd.
But there are certain crimes like those involving children and sexual crimes the department will not release.
You do have to sign up for a SafeCam account online, and you can unregister your security camera at any point.
When registered you will receive a sticker that police say they hope will deter crime.
