Fighting High-Risk Alcohol Consumption

Two proposed ordinances aimed at high risk alcohol consumption in Grand Forks are causing some debate.

The first law is a social host ordinance that would make it unlawful for anyone to provide a place where underage drinking takes place.

The other is to restrict bars from “extreme” drink specials such as all you can drink or games that focus on alcohol consumption.

UND officials say there are other cities with these laws in place.

Lori Reesor of UND student affairs said, “On the books, we’ve done all this research and we know this is the best practice and it actually makes a difference in high-risk. It’s not all of it, we know that it has to be more and we’re working on other initiatives in those areas as well.”

Both of the ordinances were tabled by the city council, but will be brought up again at their meeting on March 2nd.
