LIVE: Chuck Klosterman Speaks

FARGO — He’s a best-selling author of both fiction and nonfiction, writes for The New York Times, GQ, The Washington Post, ESPN, the Guardian and Spin.

He speaks in public all the time and is a widely acknowledged master of words.

But for Breckenridge, Minn.-born and Wyndmere, N.D.-raised Chuck Klosterman, the prospect of giving Saturday’s main commencement address at UND hits different.

Klosterman, a UND grad, came in from his home in Portland, Ore. and stopped by the Morning Show for a live interview.

He calls it an honor to be approached to speak by  UND officials, but says he’s a little nervous, not least of which because he feels as though in some part he’s representing the school.

He says he’ll have friends in the audience who are there to watch their own children graduate in the class of 2024.

Klosterman spoke with Emily about his own graduation experience, about being the poster child for the ongoing problem of “brain drain” and outmigration from North Dakota,  and about how things have changed in how we work now versus back in the 1990s, and why the dreams of students today aren’t so different than they were back then.
