GRAND FORKS, N.D. (KVRR) — Political leaders are talking about strategies for base retention and enhancement at Grand Forks Air Force Base.

It comes as the Air Force is planning to temporarily relocate 17 B-1 bombers and 800 crew members to the base early next year from Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota.

Sen. Kevin Cramer highlighted Space Development Agency investments at the base and Grand Forks.

He is advocating for the base to receive a Collaborative Combat Aircraft mission in the future.

“This is a red hot mission it’s high priority right now for the Air Force. These unmanned aircraft are a perfect fit for our UAS friendly airspace, our daily use and understanding of UAS’s, our existing radar structure and North Dakota’s Northern Plains UAS Test Site,” said Cramer.

He will attend the annual UAS Summit in Grand Forks October 8 and 9 with guest Palmer Luckey, founder of defense technology company Anduril Industries.
