LIVE: Making Time for Women’s Mental Health

FARGO — We’re midway through May and that means it’s time to talk about school wrapping up and the start of summer break.

And you might not realize it, but that often means for the women in your life, summertime is anything but a vacation.

Children are home from school or attending various day camps.

Grandparent visits need to be scheduled, vacations need to be planned and booked.

That can mean that summer can mean a significantly increased mental and physical load for moms.

And it comes just in time for both Mental Health Awareness Month and Women’s Health Month.

Both are observed in May.

Doctors say it’s important for women to watch for signs of additional stress, and make sure to set aside time to take care of yourself, not just all the other people in your life.

Warning signs that should prompt a visit with a mental health care provider include behavioral changes, irritability, lack of energy or appetite, and loss of enjoyment in activities you once looked forward to.

Dr. Alexandra Kohlhase, with Essentia Health, joined the Morning Show to talk about why women in general and mothers in particular can find it easier said than done to find time to take care of themselves, and what they can do to get through spring and summer with their sanity intact.
