Metal Detectors Likely Coming To Minnesota State Capitol
FARGO (KVRR) – Minnesota’s Senate DFL leader says there are likely to be metal detectors added at the state capitol building in the wake of the assassination of a former state house speaker and the attempt on the life of another lawmaker.
State Senator Erin Murphy wouldn’t share specifics of other changes at the capitol, saying sharing too many details would give potential bad actors looking for security soft points too much information.
She did say that while the public deserves access to the building, it’s also important for them to be and feel safe while visiting it, including the school tour groups that are frequently there.
She said the risk to lawmakers and their staff isn’t just limited to their workplace at the capitol.
She said she’s had people arrive at her home unannounced to confront her on political action.
Murphy said it’s important lawmakers need to be able to meet with and engage with constituents out in the field, and that voters deserve the right to be able to talk freely with their legislative leaders without fear of violence.
