Historic Hawthorne Home Tour Adds Wright Ingraham Home
FARGO — A beloved longtime tradition for history and architecture fans in the region is getting a new twist this weekend.
For the first time, the Hawthorne Historic Home Tour is adding its sister neighborhood, Clara Barton, to the annual tour.
And, also for the first time, a special house listed on the National Register of Historic Places will be on it.
The house along South River Road was designed in the 1950s by Frank Lloyd Wright protege Elizabeth Wright Ingraham — his granddaughter.
The home sits in the flood zone on the Red River, and in a hallmark feature of Wright’s work, was designed and built directly into the landscape in which it sits.
It was recently saved, by the efforts of the community, from a city proposal to demolish or move it to build more flood protection.
Sherri and John Stern have owned the house for three decades, but they’ve never participated before.
They say they’re joining the tour for the first time to show the community how grateful they are for their support in saving the house.
The Sterns, as well as Nikki Anderson, who owns another historic home on the tour, gave us a sneak preview of this Sunday’s tour and explained why maintaining old homes like these is a labor of love as well as a way to preserve the art and architecture of the past.
And, while tickets for this year’s tour are sold out, they’re still looking for volunteers.
You can be a ticket taker or a room monitor, and you’ll get a chance to see the homes Saturday, ahead of the crowds and ahead of Sunday’s tour date.
