Avoiding a Holiday Financial Headache

FARGO — We’ve almost hit Thanksgiving and the biggest holiday shopping event of the year — Black Friday.

And financial experts say if you want to save yourself a holiday financial headache, it’s time to start setting your holiday budget.

Whether you do your shopping online or hit the stores in person, Northwestern Mutual’s Korina Holte says you need to go in with a good idea of what you can spend.

She says you should also set your budget before you ask your family and friends for their Christmas wish list.

A big part of making the holidays more financially feasible is managing people’s expectations of you.

That can apply to adult family members insisting you buy plane tickets to come see them, or to kids asking “Santa” for a lot of big-ticket items.

Holte joined the Morning Show to talk about where you should start on your holiday to-do list, what can wait until later, and some ways you can make the holidays more about the magic of the season, rather than the gifts we’re getting and giving.
