Scheels Home and Hardware kicks off annual BBQ Championship

FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) — It’s the start of this weekend’s high-stakes competition of BBQ and grilling. Bringing together over 70 teams from across the United States and Canada.

“We have teams, as you can see behind me, that are cooking and turning in meat to certified judges. And then we also have a grill fest where we invite the public to come out for samples, and they get to be judging as well for people’s choice,” said Ashley Wait, Marketing Leader at Scheels Home and Hardware.

Each year, the championship has become bigger and better, with teams that have been grilling for years and those beginning to master the craft.

“It can be overwhelming, but you just try to have fun. You know, just try to enjoy it, I mean, everyone here is really cool. Everybody here is really fun to talk to, and they’ll teach you everything you need to know,” said Keenen Golliet, KPG Smokin’.

KPG Smokin’ started back in 2019, just in their backyard in West Fargo. Last year, they won 1st place in the Rib Classic, and they hope to win once again this year.

“This competition here is really hard, there is a lot of really good teams. Teams from all over the place. It was really fun, it was actually only our second win ever in a professional competition when we won the ribs. So that was really cool, and it’s been difficult but a lot of fun,” said Golliet.

Alongside KPG Smokin’, one griller has shared his craft for the last 19 years all over the world, including inside Scheels.

“I think in life you always need to make a living. But it’s more important in life to make a difference. So when you see the smiles on people’s faces when you eat their food. That’s actually priceless,” said Harry Soo, Slap Yo’ Daddy BBQ.

While it may be a competition, they say it’s also important to make sure that you are having fun.

The event continues tomorrow with the main event beginning at noon.
