Walz Hosts 21st annual Governor’s Deer Hunting Opener in Lanesboro, Minnesota

FILLMORE CO., Minn. (KVRR) — Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz gets the deer hunting season going in the state with the 21st annual Governor’s Deer Hunting Opener.
He traveled to Lanesboro on Saturday, in far southeastern Minnesota, and was hosted by Eagle Bluff Environmental Learning Center.
Walz was joined on the hunt by Jim Vagts, a former Board of Animal Health member and founder of Bluffland Whitetails Association.
He was also joined by hunters who are taking part in the firearms season for the first time.
With nearly half a million Minnesotans taking part in the season each year, deer hunting has a significant impact on the economy, outdoor recreation, and tourism.
“This even originated 21 years ago. Gov. Pawlenty started it carried on by Gov. Dayton and ourselves. And it’s just a way to promote both our communities, Lanesboro and the region, promoting conservation and promoting something that is near and dear to Minnesotans hunting and outdoor activities. So, good to be a part of it, it’s incredible to be down here and see the folks,” said Walz.
According to the Association of Fish & Wildlife Agencies, the average hunter invests over $2,000 annually on guns, ammunition, clothing, lodging, and food.
