LIVE: Something to Cheer About for Super Bowl Week

FARGO — We’ve got something to cheer about here on KVRR Local News: it’s less than a week to go until Super Bowl Sunday.

So we got some help cheering from the experts.

The students, parents and coach at North Dakota Elite, North Dakota’s first cheerleading gym, joined the Morning Show to demonstrate some of their amazing skills, and teach Dylan and Emily a little of how they do it.

North Dakota Elite coach Chelsea Hermanson says interest in cheerleading as a sport has been growing steadily here since they opened more than a decade ago.

She explained there are significant differences between competitive cheer versus the sideline cheering you’ll see this weekend at the big game.

Competitive cheer is a sport in its own right that combines elements of acrobatics, dance, and gymnastics in its performances.

The team has already competed in several different events so far this year, with a national competition coming up later this month.

Hermanson said children as young as three can start learning competitive cheer, and that it requires a significant time commitment, discipline and dedication to succeed in the sport.

To see the team perform some skills (and see how Dylan and Emily did with them), check out the full interview.
