Legacy and Light for the F5 Foundation

FARGO — It’s one of the most unusual nonprofits in the region, and its mission this coming month is to spotlight the tough intersection between the prison system, substance abuse, and suicide.

The F5 Foundation’s mission is to help former felons transition from the correctional system out into mainstream society, through jobs, housing, social support, and other initiatives.

Lately, though, in spite of national statistics that say we’re making positive progress in cutting down on suicide, founder Adam Martin says the F5 community has lost several people to suicide.

That’s why this year’s annual fundraiser is taking a different turn than usual.

Instead of the classic formalwear, plated-meal gathering most nonprofits trot out this time of year, the Legacy and Light event coming up next month will be something of a memorial service to those they’ve lost.

If you attend, you’ll hear speakers who talk about their journeys through the correctional system, and those who are there to honor their late loved ones lost to suicide, all as part of a candlelight ceremony.
F5 founder Adam Martin joined the Morning Show to talk about why he thought, when he started the foundation 8 years ago, that it was bound to fail, why those first few months saw him with a handful of freshly released ex-cons staying with him in his apartment, and how the program has grown in leaps and bounds each year to expand throughout our community.
