WILLISTON, ND — Fire investigators have pinpointed the origin of Monday’s blaze that gutted an historic building in Williston.

They believe the fire started by “accidental ignition” near a dental office on the second floor of the former Hedderich’s department store.

But the fire chief says it’s highly unlikely they will ever be able to narrow down an exact cause of the fire due to the extensive damage.

The building’s owner, Dr. Loye Ashton, said he locked up Monday around 5:45 and everything appeared fine.

The fire broke out shortly after and the building is considered a total loss.
