Pet Connection: Meet Fred
WEST FARGO, N.D. — You could say that Fred is the perfect companion for any lady looking for love.
He’s sweet.
He loves to cuddle.
He loves music and likes to dance.
And at at least 44 years old, with a life expectancy of about 80 years, he’s the perfect combination of maturity and life experience — but with lots of energy and enthusiasm left.
But believe it or not, this handsome umbrella cockatoo isn’t spoken for yet.
Gwen Sailer is a rescue worker at CAARE, the metro’s only avian rescue organization, and says they believe Fred was taken from the wild as a young bird and brought into captivity.
It’s not clear why he was put up for adoption by his original owner, but what is clear is that no one has ever taught Fred to fly.
He doesn’t let that stop him, though — he does okay on car rides, and likes meeting new people, although he does show a clear preference for human women.
Fred, like all cockatoos, can be loud, and while he’s extremely gentle with his beak, these birds can do real damage with them, so they are not a starter pet for an inexperienced bird owner.
They’re also highly intelligent and need lots of contact and affection, so be prepared to put some time in keeping Fred entertained and feeling loved.
